Placement/Basic Skills assessment Test

 

Asnuntuck Community College assesses the basic skill level of students in order to provide them with a solid foundation in reading, writing, and basic mathematics or algebra.  This program, mandated by the Board of Governors for Higher Education and the Board of Trustees of the Community-Technical Colleges is required for certain groups of students.  They are:

 

  • All new, full time students (12 or more credits)
  • All new students who wish to pursue a degree program (matriculate)
  • Any new student who has entered the college since the Fall of 1989 semester and now wants to register for the twelfth credit, and English class, or a math class.

Exemptions from Basic Skills Assessment:

  • Students who have an Associate Degree or higher (must present appropriate documentation, i.e. transcripts or diploma)
  • Students who have taken a college level course in English or math at another institution (must present the college transcript)
  • Students who self-select to take ENG 043 and/or ENG 073 or MAT 075 and/or MAT 095 do not need to take the assessment test but must have a "waiver form" signed by a counselor or academic advisor.
  • SAT Verbal and Critical Reading score of 500 or higher allows exemption from the Basic Skills Test and placement in ENG 101 - Composition.  SAT Math score of 400 or higher places a student in MAT 095 (Elementary Algebra Foundations)
