Manufacturing Technology Center awarded NIMS accreditation

Enfield, CT --Asnuntuck Community College was awarded National Institute for Metal working Skills, Inc. (NIMS) accreditation for several machine technology courses and was presented the award by Paul Huber, President, IPCC, Bridgeport, and President of the NIMS Board of Directors, at an accreditation ceremony held Tuesday, April 3, 2007. Mr. Huber commended the college for addressing the needs of local manufacturers who are desperate for skilled labor. He commented that many students who learn a skill like machining or welding and then go back to school for bachelor degrees with practical experience make the best engineers.
Frank Gulluni, Director of the Manufacturing Technology Center stated, “Securing accreditation from NIMS has been a six year process for the college. This nationally recognized credential assures employers that the program has quality instructors, quality equipment and quality courses.” Mr. Gulluni also referred to a study conducted in 2003 that followed 99 graduates from the college. Eighteen of the graduates tracked were machine technology students all of whom were employed six months after graduation with an average annual salary of $45,000. Connecticut Community College Board of Trustee member, Hugh Cox thanked the college for offering a program that allows young people today to learn a trade that will earn them a living wage and for assisting those students who want to go beyond the associate’s degree level with their education in the technology field.
The National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) was formed in 1995 by the metalworking trade associations to develop and maintain globally competitive American workforce.  NIMS sets skills standards for the industry, certifies individual skills against the standards and accredits training programs that meet NIMS quality requirements.

Asnuntuck Community College and area manufacturers are pleased to announce a scholarship program in precision machine technology for seniors graduating from high school this year and others who graduated within the past few years. Manufacturers are offering more than thirty full one year scholarships which include all costs: fees, books, and tuition. In fact, students selected for this successful and challenging college program will have the additional bonus of part time employment with the sponsoring company.

Successful candidates for these scholarships, each of which is valued at $4,000 to $5,000, must have high school level math and reading competencies and a genuine commitment to a career in technology. Upon successful completion of the one year 30 credit program, scholarship recipients will transition to full time employment with their sponsoring company. Entry level annual compensation will exceed $30,000 and includes an excellent benefit package. The 30 credits will apply to both associate and four year degrees in advanced technology.

The Manufacturing Technology Center is hosting an open house on April 10 from 4:00-6:30 p.m. For more information please contact Frank Gulluni, 860.253.3189 or Marianne Wineberg 860.253.3144.
