Asnuntuck Community College student represents Connecticut as the New Century Scholar at American Association of Community Colleges conference Enfield, CT—Asnuntuck Community College student and Enfield resident, Christa Douglas, has been selected as a New Century Scholar through Phi Theta Kappa, a two year college honorary society. Her application for the All-USA Academic Team received the highest score in Connecticut. The New Century Scholar is an additional scholarship and national recognition opportunity available only to students nominated to the All-USA Academic Team. The student receiving the highest All-USA Academic Team application score in each state is named a New Century Scholar and will represent his/her state in the opening ceremonies at the AACC Convention. Each New Century Scholar will receive a $2,000 scholarship and each institution will receive special recognition at the AACC Convention. The New Century Scholars program is sponsored annually by the American Association of Community Colleges, The Coca-Cola Foundation, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, and Phi Theta Kappa.Ms. Douglas, a full-time mother of two children ages four and six, is studying Accounting at Asnuntuck Community College. She plans to continue her education in Accounting after she graduates in June 2007, perhaps at AIC, and eventually would like to become a CPA. In her winning essay, Ms. Douglas wrote about how she used skills acquired in her marketing and speech classes to increase the induction rate into Phi Theta Kappa. Ms. Douglas will attend the AACC Convention in Tampa on April 14 with President McLeod to receive the award and recognition. Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,200 chapters on two-year and community college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, the British Virgin Islands and U.S. territorial possessions. More than two million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 100,000 students inducted annually.
