The Children's Reading Room

The Children’s Reading Room is a cooperative child care service that Asnuntuck Community College provides to registered students. In 1974, the program became available thanks to the Director of the Women’s Center. She realized the need for reliable, convenient, and affordable child care for students. The Children’s Reading Room is funded by the Student Senate, which is the reason Asnuntuck can offer this “priceless” service for FREE!
The children in the Reading Room are exposed to many developmental and age appropriate activities. They work on social, motor and literacy skills while playing in a safe, creative, and encouraging environment. Reading activities and various arts and crafts are incorporated into the daily schedule. Outside play is also encouraged as weather permits.
Parent Requirements
The Children’s Reading Room functions on a cooperative basis with student aides and parents. Each parent is required to volunteer for two hours a week, regardless of how much time their child spends in the child care room. Parents may leave their children while attending scheduled classes, researching, working on the computer, studying, or participating in other educational activities on campus.
Child Requirements
Children must be 3 years old or older to use the Reading Room. Parents must provide a copy of their child’s birth certificate and up–to-date immunization records. School age children are welcome but must be pre-registered.
