Information for Employers

  • Is your company increasing productivity, starting a new project or working on a special short-term assignment?
  • Do you want to utilize a student’s knowledge of new technology?
  • Do you want to save money by paying less in advertising costs and minimize your recruiting costs?
  • Are you struggling to cope with a tight labor market?

A STUDENT INTERN MAY BE YOUR ANSWER

Asnuntuck Community College’s Internship Program integrates paid and unpaid work experience with an academic program of study. The ACC Internship Program serve as a clearinghouse, offering students with varying backgrounds, to assist the needs of your organization and which directly contributes to your success.

Internships spread the good news about your company/agency to the entire community.

Participation in the ACC internship program shows other employers that you place a high value on education.
You help educate students about the real world of work, thus making them more productive members of society earlier in their professional pursuits.
Income earned by interns will primarily be spent in the local economy, promoting a good business climate.

By hiring a student Intern, you become part of the educational process and shape the business professionals of tomorrow. This is possible, with your participation and Asnuntuck Community College.

What is an Internship?

An Internship integrates paid or unpaid work experience into an education program. It forms a bridge between the worlds of school and work. Students earn money, experience and credits, enhancing the traditional education experience while applying their learning in a real work environment.

What are the benefits to employers?

Asnuntuck functions as a clearinghouse, offering students with different academic backgrounds, to save you time and money in personnel selection. Employers also gain:

Motivated, eager and enthusiastic workers with fresh ideas/viewpoints
Released time for regular employees to do higher priority tasks
Help for short term, cyclical needs
Ongoing communication with the Community College system

What are the responsibilities of a Internship Supervisor?

As a supervisor you will be expected to:

Provide a complete job description for the college to recruit students
Review resumes, interview and select students for employment
Assign meaningful tasks and provide appropriate supervision to the student
Allow and participate in a mid-term site visit with the Internship Coordinator
Complete an evaluation of each Intern.

What if it isn’t working out?

We work hard to assure a successful experience for the student and the employer. If concerns or problems do arise, the Internship Coordinator assists in resolving the issues. Students are required to provide employers with at least two weeks notice if a resolution is not possible.

What types of students from perspective program/job categories are available?

Currently, students are available for placement:

Accounting
Business Administration
Business Office Technology/ Administrative Assistant
Communications & Broadcasting
Computer Information Systems
Criminal Justice
Human Services
Machine Technology
Marketing

How long are Internship placements?

Typically, Internship placements are arranged for one semester, but can be designed to provide continuity for an employer. The Internship Coordinator will work to try to meet the needs of both the employer and the student.

How can I learn more?

Eileen Moncrief, Internship Coordinator, will discuss this new program with you. Call her at 860.253.3070, or fax 860.253.3067. Your request for information and/or assistance will be handled promptly. An intership form is available online in an Adobe Acrobat format.
